Not sure how office hours work so I’ll just dive in. I’m a big fan of thinking about other art forms, and I’m grateful to you for sharing your picks around a wide variety of media. I’m sure there are lots of ways that other arts forms can inform writing (yesterday I saw a clip of actor Mark Rylance talking about always trying to read a play as if for the first time, not knowing how it will turn out, which led me to think about trying to write as if I don’t know whether the hero will succeed). To get to the point, are there any pitfalls in letting other art forms inform writing? Or more specifically, have you ever tried bringing craft elements from other media to writing only for it to not work?
